Join us in celebrating Dr. James K. Hendren at the 2026 Heart of the Eagle Luncheon!

James K. Hendren, Ph.D., is widely recognized as a leader in technology, entrepreneurship, education, and youth development in Little Rock, Arkansas. With a career that bridges science, business, and community service, he has spent more than four decades building both companies and people. After earning his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in Physics from the University of Arkansas, Dr. Hendren became a driving force in fostering technology startups and advancing knowledge-based employment across the state. He led Arkansas Systems Inc. as CEO for 22 years, helping shape one of the state’s pioneering tech companies, and today serves as chairman of The Venture Center, where he continues to guide entrepreneurs as they transform ideas into successful businesses.

Just as influential as his professional career has been his lifelong commitment to Scouting. A Distinguished Eagle Scout, Dr. Hendren began his adult service as an Exploring Post Advisor before becoming a Scoutmaster, committee chair, and Wood Badge course director. His leadership extended far beyond the troop level. He served as council president, as well as council commissioner and vice president of finance, and gave more than a decade of service on district committees. At the territory level, he held roles including president, vice president, jamboree chair, training chair, and COPE coordinator. Nationally, he has been a dedicated member of the Philmont Ranch Committee since 2013, chairing its Business and Finance Committee since 2014, and has taken part in 16 National Jamborees in roles ranging from region chair to subcamp and base camp chief.

His contributions to Scouting have been recognized with some of the movement’s highest honors, including the Silver Antelope Award, the Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor, the Order of the Arrow Founder’s Award, and the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award. In 2025, he received the Silver Buffalo Award, the highest national recognition bestowed by Scouting America, honoring his extraordinary service to youth.

Beyond Scouting, Dr. Hendren has been a tireless advocate for education, innovation, and economic development in Arkansas. He has served on numerous boards and committees devoted to strengthening STEM education and growing opportunities for young people and entrepreneurs. Whether in the boardroom, the classroom, or on the trail at Philmont, James Hendren has built a legacy of leadership rooted in vision, mentorship, and service to others.

We are proud to recognize James Hendren as having the Heart of the Eagle!
